Inter-school bake off competition!

This fabulous event was held in the Kitchen Suite at St Andrew’s & St Mark’s Junior School just before half-term. This was the first ever Inter School Bake off to take place and was between St Andrew’s & St. Mark’s, St John’s Primary and St Matthew’s Primary.

Baking was judged out of two categories- healthy sweet and healthy savoury.

St Matthew’s Year 5 and Year 6’s had entered earlier heats (that Miss Dryden and Miss Taylor had enjoyed tasting) and we had sent two groups of our children to the final Bake Off.

They were Heidi and Kiera in Year 6 who entered a mouthwatering healthy lemon sponge and Louis, Neve and Rayan who made scrumptious savoury candy canes.

All the groups had an hour to prepare and make their dish and it was a very bustling kitchen indeed!

The two St Matthew’s groups had worked hard over the previous few weeks, tweaking and altering their final product. They had tasted, designed, made and evaluated their own delicious healthy snack. The standard of baking from all three schools was incredibly high and it was difficult to narrow it down to just a couple of finalists in each group. The tables were heaving with delicious but healthy snacks and the presentation was outstanding.

Tim Harrison from The Good Life magazine in Surbiton was one of the judges and all three judges had the difficult job of choosing a winner for each category as well as selecting a star baker from each school. Each team held a baking dialogue with the judges and articulated themselves well.  All the children and adults had great fun and in the end Heidi and Keira were judged the winners of the healthy and sweet snack category (as part of a balanced diet) as well as Keira picking up the Star Baker prize. Congratulations to all of the children who took part- and in the earlier trials- it was a fabulous afternoon and hopefully we shall enjoy many more of these events in the future.
