Eco School
We were awarded the Green Flag Award for all of our Environmental efforts last academic year. As this is a second year achieving this award, we were given a special plaque that has been placed just inside the entrance of our school. The Eco Champions, a group made up of a few children per year group, meet regularly to discuss and help with environmental projects around school. Our most recent project, the St M's Eco Re-fill sale, happens once every half term. The children have set up a stall to encourage the local community to re-fill products rather than buy more single-use plastic. Reusing and refilling containers reduces waste and prevents emissions that go into making more plastic containers. This has been a very successful project so far and has been in partnership with the Pupils Profit. The children have been improving their communication and enterprise skills at the same time as helping reduce plastic waste. They have already thought of ways to improve the business, like selling plastic-free, healthy snacks. These sales have helped raise money for the school Eco Fund whilst helping educate the children, parents and the wider community at St Matthew’s about how their purchasing choices can affect the environments.
