Spirituality at St. Matthew's
What is Spirituality?
As a school, we have recently reviewed and agreed on our shared understanding of spirituality. This has been a tricky journey to navigate, as it differs from person to person, and often changes within people during their lifetime, depending on what life experience they have had.
Spirituality is not the same thing as having a religion or a faith; a person can be spiritual without having a particular faith.
Our school staff have worked together to have an agreed definition of spirituality.
We define it as…
‘something that we experience, not something that we can see. It is about awe and wonder, critical reflection, inspiration and being aware of something ‘bigger’ outside of ourselves.’
The language we use to define spirituality is not child-friendly, so when talking to children we refer to:
A sense of awe and wonder
Enjoying the miracles of everyday life
Taking time for what really matters
Appreciating beauty in the natural world and in art and music
We plan opportunities across all areas of the curriculum which allow for the children in school to explore and contribute to their own spiritual development.
