School Allotment
At St. Matthew's we are very proud of our school allotment. We have wonderful parent/grandparent volunteers that give up their time on a Wednesday to come and run our gardening club, which has children from many of our year groups. Children see how a huge variety of vegetables and fruit grow from seed through to the harvesting stage. We have regular vegetable sales, and even support our local Surbiton Community Kitchen with fresh produce!
What Will the Children Learn:
Responsibility– from caring for plants
Understanding– as they learn about cause and effect (for example, plants die without water, weeds compete with plants)
Self-confidence – from achieving their goals and enjoying the food they have grown
Love of nature – a chance to learn about the outdoor environment in a safe and pleasant place
Reasoning and discovery – learning about the science of plants, animals, weather, the environment, nutrition and simple construction
We have also been working to achieve our RHS School Gardening Awards and we currently have our Level 3 - which asks us to extend the range of plants you grow, keeping your plants healthy and using planet-friendly approaches when you garden.
Here are some images and quotes that helped us achieve our Level 3! We are so proud of everyone who helps and we look forward to our next stage in the allotment!
