Pupil Premium
The Pupil Premium Grant (PPG) is government funding that is targeted at pupils from disadvantaged backgrounds to raise their attainment and narrow the gap between themselves and their peers. Since all evidence indicates that poverty is the single most important factor in predicting a child’s future life chances, we at St. Matthew's pride ourselves on utilising the PPG to ensure that these children benefit from the same opportunities as those from less deprived families.
Funding for Pupil Premium
2025-2026 Pupil Premium Rates
Primary (Reception - Year 6): £1,515 per pupil (eligible for Free School Meals in the last 6 years)
Looked-after children: £2,630 per pupil (in care for 1 day or more)
Post-looked-after children: £2,630 per pupil (adopted from care, or left care under a special guardianship or residence order)
Service children: £350 per child
How can the school make use of the PPG?
Schools are free to spend the PPG as they see fit, however, they will be held accountable for how they have used the funding to support pupils from low-income families. At St. Matthew’s we have a Pupil Premium Coordinator who oversees and monitors the support and assesses the impact for our Pupil Premium children.
How do we spend the PPG?
At St. Matthew’s we look at how the money is best spent by considering the individual needs of each child. Our key aim is to provide support for priority groups or individuals in Literacy and maths and to ensure full engagement within school life. Due to limited funding and resources, not all children receiving free school meals will be in receipt of pupil premium interventions at any one time. Provision may not be directed towards children who have funding from other sources.
The range of provision the Governors may consider could include:
- 1-1 support.
- Small group work.
- Additional teaching and learning opportunities.
- Resources for both underachieving and more able pupils to use at school and at home.
- Breakfast/after school facilities.
- Opportunities for participation in a range of sports.
- Counselling.
- Parent workshops.
Monitoring of Impact of PPG
Tracking of progress over time for each pupil is thorough. We use Raise Online, Phonics, EYFS SMIFs (Local education authority data summary) as well as whole school data to evaluate impact in terms of attainment and progress. From this we identify any dips or ‘gaps’ and develop appropriate strategies and interventions to promote improvement.
