Year Three - Emerald and Turquoise

Year 3 marks a big transition in your child’s learning journey but happily here at St Matthews we can make this big step together secure in our St Matthew's Family, and the routines of collective worship, lunchtimes and playtimes. In Emerald the teachers are Mrs Watts and Mrs Oswick and in Turquoise it is Miss Chamberlain-Webber. Alongside them are Mrs Zerka, who supports across both classes.

The children are encouraged and supported to be more independent, to take responsibility for following established routines, caring for their possessions and their own learning. During the course of the year we take the opportunity to learn outside whenever possible and have planned some wonderful trips to complement the children’s learning. We cover some terrific topics including the Stone Age to the Iron Age, the Roman invasion and settlement of Britain as well as mapping and geography in the Summer Term. In Science the children learn about magnets and forces, flowering plants, light and shadow as well as rocks and fossils.

In maths the children build on their understanding of calculation and learn the formal written methods for the four operations. Year 3 is also a big year for really mastering times tables which will support the children in their learning throughout KS2 and KS3. Your children will be inspired in their writing via a mix of visual literacy, books and pictures. Popular topics include inventing and explaining crazy contraptions for Wallace and Gromit and narrative writing based on the children’s classic Charlotte’s Web.
