At St Matthew’s we aim to provide our children with a high quality mathematical education which provides a foundation for understanding the world, the ability to reason mathematically, and develop a sense of excitement and curiosity about the subject. Mathematics equips children with a powerful set of tools that they can use in everyday life and we want all our children to have confidence in their problem solving skills.
Reception and Years 1-3 have begun to follow the Mathematics Mastery primary scheme. This scheme will move up the school with the children so eventually all classes will be following it.
From Year 4 upwards, we currently follow the White Rose Maths Scheme of Learning, which outlines the blocks and skills covered by each year group. The calculation policy shows you the models we use to teach mathematical principals and concepts. Where possible, we always start by using concrete resources and then move on to pictorial and finally abstract calculations. Looking at this document will enable you to see the expected progression in mathematics.
An important part of building confidence and competence in maths is achieving number fluency. A secure knowledge of number bonds and times tables can therefore help support your child’s mathematical understanding. It is also an easy skill to practise at home! Please find below a times table resource that has proved to be successful in Shanghai.
