EAL
The term EAL (English as an Additional Language) is used when referring to pupils whose main language is not English. These are children that speak another language at home which is usually their own native language.
At St Matthews primary school, we aim to work together to meet the full range of needs that these pupils and their families have. Thus ensuring that they feel valued and welcomed into the St Matthew’s community.
Upon joining St Matthews Primary school, each child and family will receive a welcome pack detailing the schools’ information. We then give each child an initial assessment so that teachers and support staff can provide targeted and specific provisions according to a child’s need.
We use the Hounslow Language Service’s Assessing Proficiency in English for Pupils of EAL. This program is very much tailored to the specific language needs across reading, writing, speaking and listening.
We use a range of strategies to support children as they develop their fluency of the English language, which in turn supports both their academic and social development.
At St Matthew's we welcome, value and celebrate the diversity that EAL pupils bring to our school and display a ‘Language of the Month’ proudly in our corridors showing useful phrases in any given language.
Below you will find useful resources that can support the learning and development for children of EAL.
