Science Week 2019

This week year 2 have taken part in St Matthew's Science Week.
The week started with an assembly by the Scientist and Artist Dr Jasmine. The children learnt all about different types of force, which benefited their learning further on in the week. The children loved learning about how the electrical current from a Plasma Ball sends waves to light up their shoes. As well as the huge explosion at the end caused by gas bubbles.
The children then were able to use their knowledge of different forces to create their own rockets using straws and air. After this we created a chemical reaction by mixing lemon juice and Bicarbonate of Soda. The children loved watching the fizz but were a little disappointed by the lack of 'explosion'. There will be further tests completed with this.
All week there has been a lot of excitement around the great egg drop. Each class designed and made packaging to protect an egg from cracking when dropped from a height. We are delighted to announce that it was a group of girls from year 2 who were able to protect their egg and won a lot of house points for their team.
Here is an action shot of the winning design.
Well done year 2!
